ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the features that make up each group session within every smiLE Therapy module. These include the physical, emotional, social and learning environment that are essential principles of smiLE Therapy and incorporate many of the emotional literacy principles within Quality Circle Time. Each smiLE Therapy group session aims to keep students thinking for themselves, developing essential group skills and learning to take responsibility within a supportive and encouraging environment. A positive start is relevant for secondary-aged students. In secondary schools, it is not uncommon for minor annoyances between students to occur when changing lessons or after a break or lunchtime. Promoting Active Listening frequently and right from the start helps the students to understand that they have a good reason to listen in smiLE Therapy sessions. Many students respond to small tokens and rewards to change their behaviours in class, and many of the techniques that work successfully in primary schools also work well in smiLE Therapy sessions.
