ABSTRACT

The creative process isn’t always smooth. Sometimes, creative clients get stuck in one of the stages of idea development and implementation. When this happens, it’s important to identify poor habits during clients’ engagement in creative work and the psychological factors that reinforce them. This chapter looks at types of creative blocks (blocked by expertise, blocked by lack of stimulation, blocked by low motivation, and so on). It shows how each stage of the creative process contributes to the development of a creative block. By reading this chapter, clinicians will get a better sense of what’s behind the elusive aha moment and will learn about the importance of “chasing the flow,” concentrative meditation, improvisation, and other tools that could help their clients manage and overcome their creative blocks.
