ABSTRACT

Creative insight occurs during moments of solitary reflection, yet creators exist within a social context that is rich in interpersonal interactions. Personal and professional relationships have the potential to inspire, support, and guide creative people’s pursuits. However, they can introduce conflicts during creative collaborations; spark resentment stemming from social disapproval; fan feelings of rivalry, envy, and nonbelongingness; and instigate other clashes. This chapter addresses the many types of social, personal, and professional relationships in creative people’s lives and the potential difficulties that they imply. It focuses on ways to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and manage overwhelming feelings so that relationships have a positive effect on creativity.
