ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on scripture and covers a wide variety of topics, about which the attitudes of boys and girls might differ. A comparison is made of the differences between the sexes in their attitudes to various sections of the subject and the hypothesis is examined that social class backgrounds would be associated with changes in response. A difference in social group was therefore accompanied by a change in the responses of both the girls and the boys, and also in the size of the gap between them. The difference between the responses of the girls and the boys taught by mistresses tended to be less than that of the girls and the boys taught by masters. The difference between the responses of the girls and boys whose attachment to a religious institution was strong, was less than that between the girls and boys whose attachment was weak or non-existent.
