ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the bullying by boys, and similar behaviour—usually less physical—by girls. Such conduct results in the weaker pupils having a miserable time, particularly in a boarding school, from which the unfortunate boys and girls have no escape, day or night; schools in which this conduct is rife can scarcely be called good schools. It was therefore thought useful to investigate whether the presence of girls in a school toned down such conduct on the part of the boys, and similarly for the influence of boys on girls, in comparison with conduct in single-sex schools. A variable which necessarily has great influence is the age of the pupils, and another might be parental occupational class. Variation between individuals, between heads of schools and between staffs, whether within single-sex or mixed schools, will be countered by the use of a large enough number of pupils and of schools.
