ABSTRACT

Trust is at the heart of all relationships. It enables them to develop, continue and end in a satisfactory way. An inability to trust can lead to problems developing and can break up what may be a perfectly good relationship. Long term, close and intimate relationships depend on it. When trust is broken, individuals can choose to work through the issues and repair the damage. Alternatively, both or one party may decide the damage cannot be repaired and end the relationship or make it less close. The degree of trust also allows people to disclose things about themselves. What is disclosed shows one person to another as they truly are and influences how the other person will respond to them. People show trust in each other by disclosing some information about themselves. If that is accepted and reciprocated then another risk can be taken to disclose something else.
