ABSTRACT

The session is intended to enable learners to take responsibility for their own support networks and how they use and develop them. Without an adequate support network individuals become isolated and vulnerable. If a realistic and sustainable network is established, it will help enable individuals to make and sustain satisfactory relationships. Everyone needs links with other people for support to cope with a complex world and to meet their everyday needs. Divide the group into sub-groups or pairs, to compare network charts and then discuss with each other how they might strengthen their individual support networks. Good interaction skills are required to maintain the network needed and to replace the gaps made when events beyond the individual’s control happen. Sometimes good changes, like getting married and having children, change what is required in a support network. Thus both good and bad changes bring about the need to adjust individual support networks.
