ABSTRACT

Children with speech sound difficulties are often hard for people outside the family to understand. Children can become reluctant to talk as they are worried that others will not understand what they want to say. Speech sound difficulties can prevent a child from taking part in nursery and classroom activities and limit their ability to express themselves – to ask questions, to give opinions, to tell stories, etc. Children often worry that, if they put their hand up to answer a question, no one will understand what they say and other children might laugh at them. Communication difficulties can lead to low self-confidence and low self-esteem.
