ABSTRACT

The point about playing games with rules is here seen as an opportunity for children to experience the challenges involved. Challenge lies in the richness and complexity of the games, the amount of coordination required between players, and the sophistication of the play. For children with autism, in particular, challenge lies too in the amount of flexibility needed to play these games. Players must cope not only with rules that change, but also with having to sort out the frequent disputes that arise in games with rules. Playing games with rules may not be right for all children, but can be very rewarding for some.
