ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to make transitions as smooth and helpful as possible for the child or young person who has selective mutism (SM). A transition is a big step for all children and young people, whether it is a change of school, class; starting for the first time at preschool, school or college; or joining a new social club or activity class. The child should be prepared several weeks in advance of the transition by making positive comments about the move and familiarising them with the building, staff and rooms, as appropriate. Staff members must understand that the majority of individuals with SM find all initiation difficult, not just starting a conversation. Time invested in agreeing and implementing a transition plan will ensure that the child adapts quickly to a new environment, builds on any progress made and develops in confidence and independence.
