ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the extended parent interview, speech and language, cognitive and literacy assessments. This comprehensive parent interview is recommended where there are additional concerns beyond pure SM. It may also be used if the child or young person is not progressing with SM intervention. The areas to be covered in the interview are set out in a logical sequence, with a main heading that can be used as a general introduction to lead into the questions. Then there are some questions in bold type, which can be used to elicit specific information. The formal assessment should be avoided, unless the information sought is considered vital to the understanding of the child and can only be gained in this way. If formal assessment really is required, the assessor must have a basic understanding of SM and be thoroughly aware of the stages of one-to-one interaction.
