ABSTRACT

This chapter forms a bridge between assessment and management. Once an assessment has been completed, it suggests that clinician note it on one form, so that what has been done and the outcome can be seen at a glance, along with the plans for management as they emerge. Although not all of the suggested materials need to be used, each section represents an important part of any comprehensive assessment. After any assessment of a child's development or difficulties, there needs to be some feedback about the resulting diagnosis and an outline of what will happen next. Once assessment is complete, an initial planning meeting needs to be set up with the parents and the key people who will be involved. Team building is crucial to effective management of selective mutism (SM), so it is important not to leave anyone out. Using a simple but comprehensive framework to underpin intervention provides a clear focus for everyone involved.
