ABSTRACT

This chapter describes first phase of Coping Plan called Yellow Phase/"The Proactive Phase". It explores some simple strategy ideas appropriate for this phase of the plan, with step-by-step directions for implementation and use. It is often possible to plan effective strategies that will minimise the chance of challenging behaviour occurring by reducing the levels of stress the young person is experiencing on a day-to-day basis. As an individual's challenging behaviour often arises in response to similar triggers, or in similar situations, it also often follows similar patterns. So, as supporting adults, an understanding that the young person's behaviour may be signalling the need to feel more in control is helpful when considering the reasons for any unwanted behaviour. When faced with challenging behaviour, emotions can run very high. In continuous reinforcement schedule, the desired behaviour is rewarded every single time it happens. Planned breaks can be a really powerful strategy for supporting many young people who present with challenging behaviour.
