ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various methods, their alternatives, and related comments to guide group members for composing a picture. Some artists deliberately 'play' with perspective, to create a sense of illusion, or to challenge and shock. Some may have realised that they were most skilled in abstract or surreal styles, rather than in interpreting perspectives realistically. It is important to explain that many artists created perspective, and developed their compositions, through trial and error. Grasping the concept of perspective and composition can be very difficult for anyone striving to be an artist! It is perhaps best to say there are no hard and fast rules to begin with, and to enable people to express themselves freely. There are other useful 'props' that a facilitator can use for this exercise, such as lists of words, a short poem or extract from a story describing a scene, a newspaper article and photographs.
