ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to find the 'artist within', to build confidence, and to promote enjoyment. The activities are designed to encourage people to focus on their own life experiences and artistic abilities, in a non-judgemental way. Trying to learn a specific technique or style, when you do not want to learn or lack confidence, can be frustrating, and can dampen what little enthusiasm is left. Many artists are known because of a specific style; some change styles frequently. It is important to avoid a feeling of frustration or incompetence if someone feels they do not have a specific style. There is also an expectation that a 'true' artist is a 'trained' artist. Learning a skill or technique in any field of life can help to enhance the work, and offers some measure of control and expertise.
