ABSTRACT

Abstract art is an effective way to work with artists who do not want, or feel unable, to interpret ideas and observations realistically. Far too often the 'emperor's new clothes' syndrome prevails, and people tend to say what they think they should, or agree with others because they lack the knowledge and courage to challenge others and voice their own opinion. Abstract art allows an artist to explore and challenge observation skills and titillate the imagination. It offers scope for spontaneity, and for individuals to make their mark without constraints and boundaries, unless they choose to impose these on themselves. Many adults who try art for the first time tend to feel frustrated because they cannot interpret what they see literally. Some will need a lot of encouragement and support to persevere and explore the diversity in abstract art, and feel comforted that they can be creative, despite feeling 'unable to draw or paint'.
