ABSTRACT

People can draw from imagination, or choose a line drawing or object to inspire them. Do this by taking the person to the table nearby or into the other room, and help them to select an appropriate prop from the collection laid out. Lay out the pictures, books and art objects around the room, on tables, walls or display boards. Encourage people to wander around the room to look at the work, and handle it where possible. Ask each person to select a piece that they think is a 'work of art'. Allow each person to talk about the piece they have chosen, encouraging them to describe what they see, and why they think it is 'art'. If necessary, be the first to start. Have a general discussion about the group's understanding of art. If verbal communication is limited, encourage people to draw or paint randomly, and briefly discuss whether what they have achieved is a 'work of art'.
