ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a step-by-step guide to basic quantitative analysis. It focuses on the more basic and commonly used statistical tests. These tests are useful, telling researcher much about their data, and providing a good introduction to running and interpreting statistical tests. The main distinction between parametric and non-parametric tests it that parametric tests are more powerful and allow to have more confidence in statistical analysis. The chapter also focuses on the fundamentals: it provides guidance on inputting data into the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). SPSS provides a highly useful tool for analysing data in ways that would be very complex were they to be attempted by hand or by using a calculator. The chapter shows researcher how to interpret the output to understand their findings. The chapter looks at how to report descriptive statistics and researcher will notice that the standard deviation is always reported.
