ABSTRACT

This chapter helps us to appreciate the importance of writing up criminological research clearly and comprehensively, and to understand the differences between writing up qualitative and quantitative research. It presents an appropriate account of each stage of the research process. The chapter acknowledges the importance of providing an interesting, concise and descriptive title for our research report or dissertation, and also helps us to write a clear, concise and informative summary of our research, known as an abstract. It is important to be aware that there is not necessarily a right or wrong way of writing up criminological research. One of the best ways to improve our own academic writing style is to read research reports, journal articles and past student dissertations. The results sections of qualitative research may also include some numbers; for example, the number of times a particular theme occurred in the data.
