ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an introduction to the overarching dialogue concerning the necessity of cultural-rich musical experiences in school-based instrumental music programs. It seeks to question the goals and efforts of traditional school-based instrumental music education programs (particularly within the traditional models of Western wind bands and orchestras), and challenges music educators to consider teaching practices, repertoires, and contexts which honor and embody cultural diversity. The chapter argues that the efforts of a culturally conscious instrumental music program can work efficiently in tandem with the traditions of currently existing instrumental ensembles. Finally, the chapter offers a brief introduction of the World Music Pedagogy approach as it pertains to school-based instrumental music contexts.
