ABSTRACT

This book is meant to serve as a resource for the implementation of World Music Pedagogy (WMP) by teachers within secondary school music classes of various innovative performance, creative, and academic emphases, and to suggest ways in which social justice is put into play through a musical education that encompasses the expressive knowledge and values of diverse cultures and pursues an equity agenda. This chapter explores the many curricular foci of secondary music classes, from class guitar to AP music theory (but not large performing ensembles), as well as the traits of the secondary music student. The chapter concludes with philosophical considerations for the implementation of WMP in secondary music settings, touching on topics such as culturally responsive teaching, transmission of music, working with culture-bearers, the challenge of authenticity, and multiculturalizing the music classroom. Through reflective teaching practices and the implementation of WMP, music classrooms can lead students toward a global empathy.
