ABSTRACT

The studies here focus on women as teachers in primary and secondary schools—their behaviors, attitudes and roles in the school system. There are a number of studies which have not been included here which do impinge on women as teachers—many studies, for example, of women in the workforce mention in passing that women form the core of the teaching profession. But these studies do not focus on women’s behaviors, attitudes and roles as teachers, they merely mention that women are teachers. For that reason, such studies have been listed under women and the workforce or women in the professions. In addition, there are some studies that mention that women are enrolled in teacher training courses. Unless those studies look at the content of teacher preparation and how that relates to women’s performance in the profession of teaching, we have not included those studies here. Finally, studies of women academics in higher education are included in Section VIII of this bibliography which focuses exclusively on higher education.
