ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the problems of women's education in Turkey in the context of other social events and examines the potential of the open learning system for solving these problems. While there has been a certain increase in the number of educated women since the establishment of the Republic, the imbalance between female and male education does still exist. Islamic religion has always had a negative influence on women. By law, primary education is compulsory for all; however, in practice this policy is not enforced with equal vigour for both girls and boys. The expansion of primary and secondary school systems has resulted in a large number of students planning to enrol in the universities. Turkey cannot afford to open many higher institutions. Therefore open learning has been accepted as an economical alternative. The Turkish Open Learning Faculty is a very young establishment. Despite its short experience it has already attempted to solve some important educational problems in Turkey.
