ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors talks about his public school system that has made an unusual commitment to good sexuality education in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1981 they began developing a comprehensive kindergarten through 12th grade Family Life Education (FLE) program. This FLE program began with a request from the Council of PTAs, and it was their wish that the program begin in kindergarten and conclude in the senior high school. Part of their success with this FLE curriculum is due to three really fortunate circumstances: they are a small manageable school system of twelve elementary schools, two junior high schools, and a single senior high school; the original request for FLE came from a broad-based group of parents and community leaders; and that request came at a time when the school board was chaired by a strong advocate of sexuality/family life education.
