ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the meaning, scope, and current status of community sexuality education, briefly exploring some of the different types of programs. It examines some of the unresolved issues in the field, which may point the way to future directions. The main advantages of community sexuality education are that programs can be made available to anyone, are voluntary, and allow the educator to be as creative as possible in determining target groups and program content. The chapter illustrates the great diversity of settings in which sexuality education occurs. A social movement always faces the danger of losing its special vitality and uniqueness once it reaches a certain level of popular acceptance. When this happens, its central message can become watered down or even trivialized. The chapter explores the social forces that perpetuate the anti-sex bias of our culture.
