ABSTRACT

National Family Sexuality Education Month, which is celebrated in October, began in 1975 under the direction of Dr. Sol Gordon at the Institute of Family Research and Education. National Family Sexuality Education Month is the springboard for a multitude of activities. Over the years, communities and organizations have been: sponsoring sexuality education programs, seminars, workshops, bookstore, library and shopping mall displays; producing TV and radio spot announcements, talk shows, hot-line question and answer programs; writing letters to newspaper editors—the list goes on and on. National Family Sexuality Education Month was created to encourage practical ideas and projects and is basically a grassroots effort. Therefore, each community is free to develop its own promotional activities and materials. There are so many innovative events being held each year, Planned Parenthood's Clearinghouse on Sexuality Education Programs and Materials has collected information on what communities are doing to provide guidance and inspiration on how to conduct a variety of local activities.
