ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the virtuous and financial rewards which may accrue and the joy of teaching where students and their experiences matter. It explains the benefits of creating an environment where students become truly empowered and motivated to embrace sustainable business, accounting and finance. The practice of business research and education in the modern world is that it is segregated and often colonised. Europe and North America dominate the field, with Australia also having an influence, but Asia and Africa are relatively far behind apart from a few exceptions. Critical thinking and self-evaluation of ideas and concepts is the key to student growth and understanding in any discipline. Sustainability presents a significant challenge to contemporary business theory and practice, and this cannot be denied. Viewed sustainably, educational establishments need to have a humane and responsible ethic, and practice the principles they preach in the way organisations respect knowledge, students and the physical and natural environment of learning.
