ABSTRACT

The Museum of Broken Relationships, founded by two Zagreb artists and former lovers, Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic, showcases a collection of everyday objects left behind at the end of love affairs. The items, donated by people from around the world, are displayed alongside narratives detailing tales of the heartbreak they symbolise. In Parerga and Paralipomena, the German philosopher Schopenhauer makes the analogy between the midpoint in the journey of our life and that of a traveller reaching the top of a hill. Emotional and psychological growth does not end with childhood or when physical maturity is complete. It continues throughout life. Jung emphasises that the task of the second half of life is to let go of our one-sided and outdated youthful bias, rediscover all that is deep within us, reclaim the disowned parts of the self and create a life that has meaning and purpose. The second half of life is a time for self-actualisation and psychological enlargement.
