ABSTRACT

Zombies have invaded our TV and cinema screens. They have become one of the 21 st century's most popular and ghastly monsters. It is common for abuse survivors to wall off emotional memories associated with past trauma and to unconsciously recreate in the here-and-now the very tragedy they seek to be put right. Challenging adolescents are not born of evil parentage. The majority of parents want the very best for their children, but those who did not experience loving infant-caregiver attachment patterns and whose early development was contaminated by fear, deprivation or coercive control, cannot give what they never received. Just as secure attachment patterns repeat across generations, so too do dysfunctional ones. The adults unfit for parenthood are not heartless monsters, immoral perverts or sadistic freaks. They are survivors of adverse childhood experiences who are still haunted by the terrors of bygone years.
