ABSTRACT

Morocco will be faced with a considerable rise of the proportion of people aged 60 and over in the next few decades. This chapter contributes to the understanding of the demographic ageing process, which follows a rapid demographic transition notably characterized by a considerable and fast fertility decline. Concomitantly, and despite persistent internal gaps, mortality has significantly declined. Old age is consequently tending to become an increasingly established phase of the life cycle. It refers, however, to a wide range of economic and social realities. Thence the current disparities present major challenges regarding public policies.
