ABSTRACT

The Hopi Village of Moenkopi, between the Grand Canyon and the Hopi Mesas in Arizona, faces the dilemma of combining contemporary lifestyles with traditional ways. These offered a group of planning scholars the opportunity to explore alternative planning and design strategies to create meaningful and sensitive settlements for the new Hopi generations. A simple housing proposal evolved to an immersion in cultural spatial concepts. The chapter describes the process of establishing a planning strategy while creating a sustainable sense of community and identity through listening, learning and reacting to the needs and worldviews of the Hopi.
