ABSTRACT

In one hospital the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) room was almost entirely beige – the walls, notice board, curtains, seat covers and filing cabinet, with one item camouflaging the next! Such a neutral scheme is the perfect solution for clients who are distractible, or for those who cannot abide particular colours. Some on the autism spectrum, for example, may not be able to tolerate bright colours or lots of posters. On the other hand, some clients may find a lack of colour a boring prospect, even depressing, and, for those who have some degree of visual impairment, a room that is all one colour can be difficult to navigate around. A good compromise seems to be to have a fairly soothing neutral background, but one which is enhanced by posters and other decorations. Distractible clients are often comfortable with these if they have been involved in some way with the making process.
