ABSTRACT

In August 1964, off the coast of North Vietnam, the US Navy monitored shipping and communications into and out of Haiphong. In November 1965, the US had intelligence that the NVA was concentrated at the Ia Drang Valley, and moved to counter them. In 1967, the US attempted to pacify and secure the rural areas, once Saigon was relatively stable. In 1971, a political storm erupted in the US when the secret Pentagon Papers were leaked to the New York Times. By the end of 1972, the US had only three major demands: first, release and repatriation of all US prisoners of war; second, non-aggression from the North on South Vietnam; and third, a US exit from the war. The Paris Peace Accords 1973 ended the US involvement in the Vietnam War. India was first, with their first atomic test in 1974.
