ABSTRACT

Classrooms, as well as corridors, staffrooms and offices, are all part of the learning environment that contribute to the well-being and effectiveness of the school as a whole. For students, staff and visitors alike, their early impressions form the basis of their relationship with the school, and it is therefore vital that these impressions are good. Establishing a sense of communal responsibility for the environment as a whole is one component of working towards an emotionally literate school. All members of staff and students are able to contribute by being good role models and adhering to the expectations of all users of the building and site. It is important to remember that good behaviour can be 'caught' as well as taught. Classroom environment checks are always easier, and more effective, if they are conducted with the assistance of a colleague. Joint users of a room should carry out the check as a cooperative venture.
