ABSTRACT

The whole class is busy and actively engaged in a variety of learning activities, such as discussion, partner work and quiet reading. The teacher is moving from group to group, dealing with individual difficulties and scanning the class to check on general behaviour. A range of strategies is being used to reward appropriate behaviour and to refocus any off-task students. Sometimes the teacher will want to address the entire group, and sometimes individual students will need to speak to the teacher. There are numerous strategies, any of which may be successful for the individual teacher, to gain the attention of the whole class or group. Whichever is chosen, the key to success is to take the time to teach the strategy or strategies to the whole class. The same clarity of teaching must be employed when determining strategies for students to attract the teacher's attention.
