ABSTRACT

Teachers, classroom assistants and administration staff come into contact with a wide range of young people in their daily routines. Some of the young people they work with have not mastered many of the behavioural skills that staff often assume they should have acquired. Some students have simply never been taught what is and what is not acceptable according to the environment in which they find themselves. The teacher's job is to provide an enriched learning environment in which students are encouraged to be motivated, enquiring and independent. Classroom rules, and indeed the school rules, should be taught to all students from day one, and they should be referred to regularly. Essential rules, such as fire practice, are reinforced on a regular basis. Students accept the importance of these drills and, indeed, can often get quite excited by them.
