ABSTRACT

For many students just simply 'getting through' the hour-long lesson can be a major issue. Anxiety or even foreboding can begin at the start of the week, sometimes even on the way to school on the first day. It is true to say that some students may well be preparing themselves for disruption, confrontation or exclusion from the lesson before the classroom is even reached. This negative approach to the day can often result in challenging or off-task behaviour. Most teachers will be aware of how much time is allocated to each of the segments listed above and students will also know, from experience, how long each takes. Some students, such as those who have come to school in a negative frame of mind, will choose not to be concerned with timing. Many younger students will find a visual reminder very helpful in planning a structure to their work.
