ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses individual student goals and future planning. The counselor’s main tasks involved in individual student planning include appraisal and advising. For example, school counselors assist students in developing individual learning plans and transitioning from one grade level to the next (ASCA, 2012). According to the ASCA National Model, school counselors devote a certain amount of their time, depending on the grade level, to providing individual student planning as part of their delivery services. Additionally, school counselors assist students with setting goals, making decisions, learning coping and social skills, and making plans for transitions and post-secondary opportunities. Individual student planning does not always require one-on-one meetings with students and parents. Some other delivery methods might include meeting with small groups of students and/or parents, classroom guidance, or grade-wide meetings. Tools for counselors to use in individual student planning are included.
