ABSTRACT

The chapter on group counseling highlights one of the most effective school counseling strategies that is appropriate for a variety of student issues at all grade levels. According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) [2014], group counseling is a necessary intervention in the Comprehensive School Counseling Program and provides an opportunity for students to adjust, cope, communicate, and collaborate in a safe environment. Students with similar problem situations can offer each other support under the watchful eye and facilitation of the professional school counselor. The chapter provides information on how to set up and run groups on a variety of topics at different grade levels. Additionally, a model for group counseling is provided, with two complete examples on how to implement the model.
