ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of the influences that have led the author to develop as a mujerista, having a multicultural theoretical orientation in her psychological practice as well as in her leadership service. As an illustration of her leadership, the author is the first Latina president of the prestigious American Psychological Association. She reveals experiences of discrimination, parents who were politically active, and receiving messages that we were worthy despite maltreatment, as well as support and encouragement from a variety of sources – all significant experiences that have led her to a wild and wonderful professional and personal life. While writing her testimonio, the author experienced the death of her mother and shares her grieving process, highlighting the remarkable legacy of empowerment that her mother left her.
