ABSTRACT

The IOM recommended the development of integrated service systems that link community-based screening and brief intervention to assessment and referral activities. In practice, SBIRT consists of three components: screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment. Screening and brief intervention for risky and harmful alcohol use is recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force and SBIRT is an insurance-reimbursable service across an increasing number of interdisciplinary behavioral health practice settings, including some college and university health and counseling centers. This chapter outlines a number of common barriers to SBIRT implementation on college campuses and will discuss potential strategies to address. For example, a brief intervention may be conducted when giving a prescription to a student or treating a sprained wrist or ankle. The Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students, a harm reduction approach, is a preventive intervention for college students 18- to 24 years old.
