ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines why biodiversity is valuable from an economic point of view. It presents the common valuation frameworks of ecosystem services (ESS) and total economic value (TEV). The book also offers a comprehensive account of different attempts to define and measure biodiversity. It also provides critical survey of existing literature on the economic value of biodiversity. The book then focused on conceptual works on the economic value of biodiversity. It turned out that there exists much interesting literature on that, but the relevant literature strands are only limitedly related to each other. Particularly influential were the Noah's Ark literature and the related 'biodiversity as portfolio' perspective.
