ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the benefits and pitfalls of engaging young children in public performance of the world’s musical cultures. As music is a performative, social art form, young children may be exposed to this facet. Various possible general formats for public performances are offered in order to allow young children to share their musicking in developmentally appropriate ways, such as “informances” or family-oriented group music programs. Sample performance themes and programs are shared. This chapter also warns teachers of young children against pushing young children to perform in ways that do not align with their musical and social development.
