ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the diverse the definitions and approaches to learning/volunteer abroad for development (LVA4D) programmes. It situates the sample from the empirical research within the broader forms and experiences of volunteer abroad programmes. The chapter examines how volunteers participate in programmes abroad and the kinds of programmes available to prospective volunteers. It analyses why volunteering abroad programmes have gained popularity, and why the volunteers and hosts choose to participate in them. Many of these motivations for participation are linked to broader trends. The chapter presents core motivations - as an initial and 'unpacked' summary of several core themes emerging in the research as the reasons why LVA4D volunteers and host partners participate in these programmes. It maps out a range of international volunteering options delineated by length of time abroad as well as some important trends and common practices within this sector.
