ABSTRACT

Geohazards in loess-covered areas of China mainly include collapse, landslide, earthflow, ground subsidence, and ground fissure. In China, loess is mainly distributed in the provinces along the middle reaches of the Yellow River. Loess slopes have many joints, of which the scales, origins, natures, and periods of formation are different. The shape, gradient, and height of loess slopes are closely related to the occurrence of collapses. Loess slopes with more trees and shrubs are more prone to loess collapses. Loess collapses often distribute densely along the valley on both sides of the river, and gully slopes are areas prone to loess collapses. Loess landslide is a phenomenon in which the loess mass is separated from a high and steep slope along a weak structural plane under the influence of its own gravity. China is one of the countries with a frequent occurrence of landslides. The Loess Plateau of China has a semi-arid continental monsoon climate.
