ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on what has been done effectively in the past, lessons learned by higher education and organization administrators, and how to anticipate and proactively address hazing-related behaviors in the future. In addition to higher education and institutional considerations, there are issues related to student populations that require specific attention when proactively educating students, organizations, and advisers about hazing behaviors. There are several key issues related to hazing in higher education, including Title IX legislation in the context of sexual misconduct, mental health issues on campus, toxic masculinity, and the use of drugs by college students. The role of inclusivity in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, and other intersecting identities is a key consideration in advising, educating, and training organizations. The chapter emphasizes the role of awareness, education, leadership, and community in disrupting hazing habits. Hazing prevention must be driven from strong leadership in organizations and on campuses in order to develop buy-in from student organizations and teams.
