ABSTRACT

Fraternity and sorority life is a defining experience in the lives of many students in higher education. Fraternity and sorority life have provided the author with opportunities for her own growth and learning. During her tenure at the University of Iowa, the author helped found Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity in 1986. In 1990, she helped start Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority. The author reflects on her lived experiences and provides key notes from the lessons learned about hazing as a former executive director for two national organizations. Hazing is a set of practices and habits that have historically violated the true meaning of fraternal life. Organizations are a reflection of their leaders. Hazing habits that are encouraged by leaders will be perpetuated by chapters. Leaders who align organizational activities with the values of the chapters will cultivate organizations that seek to build on those values for stronger chapters and stronger individual members.
