ABSTRACT

Four independent theatre groups put on a total of 60 performances for schools and parents, featuring the conflicts between teenagers and adults on questions of "morality." Since the average age of girls at first intercourse had dropped from 17 in the late sixties to 16 in the early seventies, a further increase in teenage abortions could be projected. In the majority of teenage relationships that resulted in pregnancy, contraceptives had not been used. Gotland, about 100 miles long, with a population of 55,000 is a former Baltic shipping center, now largely agricultural, still characterized by extended families and strongly rooted traditional ideas, rather isolated from the mainstream of Swedish life. Contraceptive services were available only at the maternal-health center of the county hospital. They were not considered an important part of the gynecological service.
