ABSTRACT

Employment settings for an athletic trainer include high schools, colleges and universities, professional sports teams, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, physician offices, corporate and industrial settings, the military, and the performing arts. Historical records indicate that some of the earliest known athletic trainers were associated with the athletes of the ancient Greek civilization. The modern sports medicine clinic is typically equipped with an array of exercise machines, both isokinetic and isotonic. Students interested in becoming Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) must earn a degree requiring courses from an accredited athletic training curriculum. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers who are highly educated and multi-skilled health care professionals. ATs work in a variety of practice settings; these include the traditional settings of secondary schools, colleges/universities, and professional sports as well as the emerging sectors such as hospital and clinical, industrial/occupational, military, law enforcement, performing arts, and physician extenders.
