ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview programs and services related to disability that are developed and funded through the public sector. The federal government also provides information and publications to educate consumers and private citizens about laws, programs, statistics, and research that affect people with disabilities. Federal agencies provide a multitude of resources regarding statistics, laws, employment, education, and income support. Disability resources from various states provide a sampling of the kinds of resources states maintain for people with disabilities. In most states, health and human services agencies provide the majority of the programs and resources to meet the needs of people with disabilities; employment, education, rehabilitation, housing, and aging offices may also be helpful in locating resources. The Social Security Administration was originally a part of Health and Human Services but its own independent agency.
